From State Superintendent, Dr. Lane:

As coronavirus has prompted the cancellation of high school graduation ceremonies across the country, partners like the Lebron James Family Foundation, XQ Super Schools, the Council of Chief State School Officers and former President Obama all came together on Saturday, May 16 to pay tribute to millions of high school seniors, their extraordinary teachers, and their families, as rally everyone around a message of hope and unity. The national broadcast also featured Richmond's own and 2019 National Teacher of the Year, Rodney Robinson, as part of the all-star line up!

Announcements:

  • Students and their families are encouraged to use a variety of information sources to select a college and major. The State Council of Higher Education for Virginia (SCHEV) has created an institutional profile for each Virginia public college and university, and for each independent college or university participating in the Virginia Tuition Assistance Grant Program; click here to access that link.

  • Affordable Colleges Foundation, an organization dedicated to providing free higher education tools for current and future college students and their families, recently published research on all the Not-For-Profit universities and colleges in Virginia that offer online college programs. Historically, online programs have only been offered by for-profit institutions. Today, many of the most established not-for-profit state colleges and national universities have launched programs that provide flexibility and lower tuition prices for students. This dataset is unique to our site and is even ahead of the curve compared to other government education data sources such as NCES and IPEDS. A few of the key features on the page:
    - Unique list of accredited not-for-profit institutions offering online programs, sorted by affordability
    - Spotlight interviews provided by many college deans with the institution's philosophy on online learning
    - Direct links to the specific online departments, or e-campus, of each institution

  • The Bedford County School Board approved a revision to regulation IK-R at its December 2013 meeting. The high school graduation recognition section was altered based on the timeline for determining honors based on our current and future calendars:
    • Graduation Recognition:The graduation distinction of honors or high honors status is determined by numerically calculating cumulative grade point averages of students classified as seniors. Students are recognized as achieving high honors status when their grade point average is 4.0 or above. Students are recognized as achieving honors status when their grade point average is 3.75-3.99. Grade point averages will be figured at the end of the first semester for this purpose. Final transcripts will reflect the ending grades and class rank of all students.
