March is Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month. Do you know your risks? Here are some lifestyle changes you can make to decrease your risks.
1. Start your screenings at the age of 50. If you have a family history of colorectal cancer, talk to your doctor about earlier screening.
2. Eat a diet rich in vegetables, fruits, and whole grains. Decrease your intake of red meat and processed meats and food.
3. Watch your weight. Overweight or obese? Talk to your doctor about a diet plan.
4. Stop smoking
5. Limit your intake of alcohol. For men, no more than 2 drinks per day and for women, no more than 1 drink per day.
6. Start a regular exercise routine and stick with it.
Following all these steps not only decreases your chances of colorectal cancer, it also decreases your chances of heart disease and diabetes.
