Annoucements from the School Counselors
  • Here is a comparison between the New SAT and the ACT.
  • Plans are now being made for the 2016-2017 Engineering Mentoring Program.  For over 30 years, BWXT, Areva, and NovaTech have provided the students at the local school districts the opportunity to work on projects with engineers to learn about engineering principles.  Students interested in the engineering field who want to participate in this program should see Ms. Whorley in the school counseling office.
  • Seniors who are interested in pursuing a career in teaching are encouraged to see Ms. Whorley about a new teachers initiative with CVCC and Lynchburg College.  The GROW YOUR OWN TEACHERS program participants will complete two years of course work at CVCC while also taking selected classes at Lynchburg College.  Students enrolled in this program will also be eligible for Lynchburg College club sports as well as other activities through Lynchburg College. Additionally, the program allows for  students to graduate in four years (including student teaching).  Scholarship and financial aid opportunities are available for participants.

  • The Jostens representative was here to today to talk with seniors and give them their graduation order information.  Please ask your senior for the information so that you can benefit from the fall group rate pricing. We are very excited that The Class of 2017 will be the first class to be wearing a navy blue gown with red trim on the sleeves; therefore seniors will not be able to wear a gown from a past graduation.  Seniors ordering a cap/gown/tassel only will not need to make a deposit at the time of ordering and the total cost is $37.38 with tax if ordered before the deadline.  Orders need to be paid in full by March, 2017.  Seniors ordering additional items are requested to place a $75.00 deposit at the time of ordering. As a reminder, orders are being placed on September 19 and 20th. Questions should be directed to Jostens: 1-800-567-8367 or email www.jostens.com/contact

  • The Virginia Department of Education (VDOE), in collaboration with the Virginia Association of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance, MADD Virginia, and Virginia Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control, is pleased to provide Power of Parents, a brochure focused on preventing youth underage drinking. This brochure is for all parents of seniors to commemorate the senior year and preparation for graduation. Research indicates that parents are the key to preventing youth underage drinking, and teens are significantly less likely to drink if they have a parent who delivers a clear and consistent message that underage drinking is unacceptable. To further ensure our students have a safe and healthy senior yea, we are providing high schools across Virginia with critical brochures to support parent conversations with their seniors about underage drinking and DUI prevention.  More resources can be found at http://www.preventunderagedrinkingva.com/parents/index.html
